Why Tutor at the Learning Commons?

Tutors love our flexible schedules. They also enjoy helping other students succeed!

 

What Do Tutors Do?

Tutors help students learn course materials and develop their study skills. Tutors do not teach course content.


What Hours Do Tutors Work?

New tutors generally work 6  to 12 hours per week between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm Mondays - Thursdays.

 

How Do Tutors Help Students Learn?

Tutors guide students through the processes of solving math equations or writing and revising their papers. Tutors also share strategies for studying and learning biology and other subjects. 

 

Do Tutors Do Homework, Take Tests, or Edit Papers for Students?

No. Tutors are like coaches. They give students tips to help them strengthen their knowledge and skills. Tutors don't do the work for students.

 

What Qualifications Do I Need To Be A Tutor?

  • An 'A' grade earned at Jefferson in one of these courses:
    • ENG 102
    • MAT 146
    • MAT 150
    • BIO 112
    • BIO 137
    • BIO 139
    • CHE 170
    • SOC 101
  • Two professional recommendations -- at least one must be from your professor.
  • Successful completion of at least one semester of coursework at Jefferson.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • GPA of 3.0 or better.

 

How Do I Apply?

We accept applications on a rolling basis for tutoring positions at each campus Learning Commons. If we have an opening that meets your qualifications, we will contact you to schedule an interview.
