Becoming a Peer Tutor

Peer tutors are JCTC students or recent graduates. If you have a master’s degree and are interested in tutoring, please see our Apply to Be an Adjunct Tutor page!

Why Tutor at the Learning Commons?

Tutors love getting paid to help other students succeed! They also enjoy our flexible schedules, paid training and supportive environment, not to mention the opportunity to expand their resumés. You don't have to be an expert to be a good tutor! In fact, the best tutors are often those who struggled in the class themselves.

We strongly encourage people of all backgrounds to apply. Tutoring is stronger when made up of employees who differ in ability, ethnicity, experiences, gender identity, language, neurodiversity, race, religion, sexual orientation, and all the other things that make you you. We welcome the unique contributions that you bring as unique individuals!

What Do Tutors Do?

Tutors help students learn how to learn. In particular, tutors assist with course material and study skills.

How Do Tutors Help Students Learn?

Tutors collaborate with students to help them strengthen their knowledge and skills. Tutors work with the student, rather than doing the work for the student.

What Hours Do Tutors Work?

Tutors follow a set weekly schedule for the semester. New tutors generally work 6 to 16 hours per week. The exact schedule depends on tutor preference and Learning Commons needs.
