Tips for Student Success

Student Services has put together 5 tips for staying successful during this transition to online learning during this time.

COVID-19 Shutdown

We know that this can be a scary and challenging time as you navigate moving from in-person to online classes. Below are a few of the resources available to Jefferson students during this time.

The Learning Commons now offers two types of online tutoring!

  • Online Writing Tutoring with Written Feedback: Send us your writing and we’ll send you our thoughts.
  • Online Live Video Tutoring: Work with a tutor in real time, just as if you were meeting in person.

See our tutoring page for more information.

Single Sign-On Error

If you are trying to access a Learning Commons database and encounter an error, try clearing your cache or even using a different browser. Learn how to clear your cache on any device. Alternatively, if you are using Chrome or Firefox, here is a PowerPoint with detailed directions on how to clear your cache.

You can also use a private browsing window to access databases:

  • Chrome > Incognito window
  • Firefox > Private window
  • Edge/IE > InPrivate window

If the problem persists, please reach out to us through Ask a Librarian.

Overdue Books & Fines

Any books that were due during the COVID-19 shutdown will automatically be renewed. Fines and fees on books or DVD's will be waived through the end of the semester for books. However, fines and fees that accumulated before March will remain in place.

Using Blackboard

KCTCS has created a resource to help you navigate blackboard. There are links to videos on specific concerns you may have like submitting assignments or participating in class discussion boards.

Some students are struggling with Blackboard Collaborate because they need to clear their cache. Learn how to clear your cache in any browser or see the PowerPoint on clearing your cache in Chrome or Firefox. Also, Internet Explorer does not support Blackboard Collaborate so please pay attention to which browser your computer is attempting to use.

Online Services

There are many online services available for students during this time. Learn more about Online Services offered to Jefferson students.

Mental Health Services

Jefferson students can receive mental health services through the The Spalding Center for Behavioral Health. The Spalding Center is still open via telehealth. You can request an appointment by emailing Megan at or through the Behavioral Health website.

They are also offering two group sessions. See the flyer to learn more:

Internet Access

WiFi is available on the student parking lot of the Downtown Campus. Access points are on each light pole. The tech campus has WiFi available in the faculty lot of Building B.

If you do not have internet access at home, Spectrum is offering free WIFI access for 60 days for all K-12 or College students. Learn more about how you can get free internet access on their website. Many other companies are offering coverage solutions for students throughout the nation as well.
