Children and Reading

Teachers of young children have an important role in developing the early stages of reading and writing. Teachers can influence positive attitudes towards reading and writing by creating an environment that provides rich opportunities to engage in stories and the printed word. Children learn about literacy through interaction with their world. Literacy development is a part of the total communication process that includes listening, speaking, reading and writing. Resources provided on this page are intended to support students in developing lesson plans that foster literacy through everyday activities from early childcare through elementary school programs.

Reading is Fundamental
Reading is Fundamental is the largest literacy non-profit organization in the United States. Inspiring our nation’s most vulnerable children is the mission of RIF. This organization functions through a network of more than 400,000 volunteers. Whether in schools, homeless shelters, or community centers—wherever you find children—RIF volunteers spend countless hours distributing books, staging reading motivation activities, and promoting the importance of literacy in their communities. Since its founding in 1966, RIF has placed 400 million books in the hands of more than 35 million children.
