Two ways to point students to tutoring services are by sharing information about tutoring with your class as a whole and by raising a tutoring flag for an individual student.

We find that students respond best to referrals when the faculty member has discussed tutoring services with the student before raising a flag in Starfish. Many students hear “referral” and think something is wrong, so it’s essential to emphasize both the benefits of tutoring and that successful students routinely seek academic support.
Here are some talking points we have found effective:
Finally, before making a referral, consider whether tutoring is the best solution. For example, if the student is not attending class or turning in assignments, tutoring is unlikely to help. Students who are putting effort into your course are most likely to benefit from working with a tutor or librarian.
