Required Elements

Papers in MLA format have the following features:

  • Heading & Title
  • Running head with page numbers
  • Works Cited page
  • 1 inch margins all around (excluding the running head)

Heading & Title

The heading should have several components:

  • Your name
  • Your instructor's name
  • Course name & number
  • Date (Months can be spelled or abbreviated, follow instructor's guidelines)

The title goes on the next line centered on the page. Your title should not be bolded, italicized or in quotation marks. Both the heading and title should be double-spaced like your entire page.

Example of Heading and Titles

Notice in the example above that the entire paper have 1 inch margins except for the running head which has a 1/2 in margin. The title has no special embellishments and the first line of the actual paper is indented by 1/2 an inch as all new paragraphs should be.

Running Head with Page Numbers

The running head in MLA papers includes your last name and the page number. See the gallery below for instructions on adding a running head to your paper. The running head will continue through your entire paper including the Works Cited page.

How to Add a Running Head

Step 1: Click Insert

Step 2: Click Page Numbers

Step 3: Under Page Numbers, Hover on Top of Page, and Select Plain Number 3

Steps 4 & 5: Use the left arrow key to move the cursor in front of the number and type your last name. Then click Close to add your running head.

Works Cited

The Works Cited page begins on a brand new page with the word Works Cited at the top of the page. The running head should be continued onto the Works Cited page. See the portion of this guide on Works Cited details for further details.
