What are Reference Resources?

A reference resource is a fancy name for background information. Background information is useful because it introduces you to a topic you don't know much about. It can be an excellent way to find search terms to use later. Reference resources include background, overview and historical information on your topic.

Reference books in the Library

These are print reference books that you will have to go to the library in person to use. If you're having trouble finding your search terms, try checking the index at the back of the book.

You might try searching for "fairy tale" or "folklore" in one of these sources in the reference area of the Downtown Library. Ask a librarian if you need assistance.

Reference Works Online

These are encyclopedias and other reference sources available online. These sources are similar to Wikipedia but may contain more reliable information.

Note: Enter your KCTCS ID and Password (same one you use for email or Blackboard) when prompted.
