March 11: Dorothy Schiff was born (1903)

On March 11, 1903, Dorothy Schiff was born. She became the first female newspaper publisher in New York City, overseeing the New York Post. Schiff was known for her support of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and is credited with influencing Nelson Rockefeller's election as Governor of New York. In 1976, she sold the Post to Rupert Murdoch.

Challenge

  • Watch Ronnie Eldridge’s interview with Marilyn Nissenson, author of The Lady Upstairs: Dorothy Schiff and the New York Post.
  • Dorothy Schiff used her platform to influence public discourse, prioritizing investigative journalism and social issues. Write up or draw up a mock front-page of a newspaper, headlining what you’d like to see mainstream media covering today.
