March 2: The Jones Act Grants U.S. Citizenship to Puerto Ricans (1917)

Julia de Burgos (1914–1953) was one of Puerto Rico's most celebrated poets and a passionate advocate for social justice. Through her poetry, she explored themes of identity, feminism, and Puerto Rican pride, giving voice to the struggles and beauty of her homeland. She remains a powerful literary figure whose words continue to inspire generations.

Challenge

  • Read “I was My Own Route” (Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta) by Burgos.
  • Reflect on her words: How does Burgos’ poem speak to themes of identity and freedom? What does identity mean to you? How has your cultural heritage shaped your sense of self?
