March 30: Imogen Binnie reads from Nevada at Pegasus Books (2013)

Imogen Binnie is an American novelist, journalist, and transgender activist, best known for her groundbreaking novel Nevada (2013), which has become a seminal work in trans literature. Born in New Jersey, Binnie developed a passion for storytelling and pursued a career in both writing and advocacy.

Her novel Nevada follows a trans woman named Maria Griffiths as she embarks on a road trip of self-discovery, offering an unfiltered and deeply personal exploration of gender identity, dysphoria, and trans experiences. The book was praised for its raw, witty, and unapologetic voice, making it a cult classic in queer literature and influencing a new generation of trans writers.

Beyond fiction, Binnie has worked as a columnist and editor, contributing to publications like Maximum Rocknroll and PrettyQueer. She has been an outspoken advocate for trans representation in literature, emphasizing the importance of authentic, nuanced trans voices in storytelling. Her work has helped shape modern trans narratives, ensuring that trans characters and experiences are represented with depth, honesty, and complexity.

Challenge

  • Watch the reading of Nevada Part 1 on YouTube.
  • Or read, “The Invention of the Trans Novel” in The New Yorker.
  • Write a short reflection in which you discuss one of the following:
    • How does Nevada challenge or expand traditional literary narratives?
    • Why is it important for trans writers to tell their own stories?
    • How does Binnie’s approach to storytelling differ from mainstream portrayals of trans experiences?
