March 12: Juliette Gordon Low founds the Girl Scouts of the USA in Savannah, Georgia (1912)

Juliette Gordon Low (October 31, 1860 – January 17, 1927) was an American philanthropist and the founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was passionate about empowering young girls and providing them with opportunities for leadership, outdoor activities, and community service. Inspired by the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides movements in England, she established the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah. Under her leadership, the organization grew rapidly, encouraging girls to develop independence, confidence, and skills in areas traditionally reserved for boys. Today, the Girl Scouts continue to honor her legacy by fostering leadership and service among millions of young women worldwide.

Challenge

  • Read Low’s “When I was a Girl.” on pages 6-7 archived at the Digital Library of Georgia.
  • Low believed in service, leadership, and empowering young people. Brainstorm one action you can take this month that aligns with her vision (e.g., volunteering, mentoring younger students, organizing a community event).
