English Language Learners (ELL) / English as a Second Language (ESL)

This Learning Guide is designed to help you with grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. It includes:

  • resources for rules and common errors
  • practice quizzes and exercises
  • resources for English Language Learners.

If English is not your first or native language, you may sometimes be called an "English Language Learner" (ELL) or "English as a Second Language" (ESL) student. Writing in English may present special challenges if you are learning the language. Some languages, for instance, do not use articles ("a," "an," and "the"), and it can be difficult to decide when to use them in English. This page offers some resources. Feel free to use the in-person writing help listed under "Grammar Resources." You may also want to Google "ESL Grammar" or "ELL Grammar."

Library Resources: Reading Help

In Room 202 on the 2nd floor of the Downtown Campus Library (also known as The Learning Commons), there is a collection of materials specifically chosen for students to practice reading in English.

The other campuses of JCTC also offer help in reading and writing. Visit the Learning Commons on your home campus.
