Organizing Your Files

Screenshot of a Windows File Explorer with organized folders and documents

When you are saving a file:

  • Always be consistent with your file names, it makes everything organized.
  • Give your file a recognizable name, if you liked the charts in one study save it as "Essay with good charts" if there was an interview you read in another report and want to use that in your paper, save the study as "Report with interview".
  • Be descriptive but don't get too detailed, you don't want to confuse yourself!

USB Devices

Important files that you always seem to need are best kept on a USB device. Keep a USB device in your bag or on your key chain, you never know when you will need to print a file.

Here are some files to always keep on your main USB:

  • Updated Resume
  • Generic cover letter that can be edited as needed.
  • A list of professional references
  • Assignments you're working on, like a paper you're writing.
  • Things you need to print the next day! Much easier than pulling up your files online! Plug in and Print!

Cloud File Manager

Always have all your files with you no matter what computer you log into! The Cloud is a place where ALL your files can be stored and managed.

The Cloud is simply an online filing cabinet.  Here you can keep:

  • Current and previous assignments
  • Files you need to do your homework
  • Scholarly articles you find through the Learning Commons (you never know when you will need to access these files)
  • Resumes, cover letters, professional references
  • Paperwork for personal needs like FAFSA applications, rental agreements, insurance paperwork, etc.
